Hood Brook Apiary has been considering becoming a non-profit organization for Pollinator Research, Protection, and education. After carefully reading through information on 32 different types of legal nonprofits, we have concluded that we will be applying for what is called a 501(c) (3) Nonprofit.
An organization may qualify for 501(c)(3) status if it is run for religious, charitable, scientific, literary or educational purposes. It may also qualify if it operates to advance national or international sports competitions, test for public safety, or prevent cruelty to animals or children. Examples include schools, Boys and Girls clubs, churches, and elderly care homes.
Hood Brook Apiary feels it will fit into this category due to its mission and goals of helping to fund honeybee and pollinator research and education.
We have decided that it would be best for us to get firmly on our feet and fully recovered from the devastating winter losses of the 2021-2022 season. So, at this time, we are targeting early 2027 before officially becoming a Nonprofit. We will apply in mid-summer of 2026. As of today, 09/08/2024, it will be just over 1 ½ years before we will apply. From there we hope to be official by early 2027.
